Stigma in mental health

One of the most challenging elements of living with a mental health disorder for both the person and their families is stigma. People avoid seeking help because they are afraid of being labeled mentally sick. Stigma causes shame and humiliation, which can cause people to delay or avoid seeking help. Mental illness stigma comes in many forms: cruel words, social exclusion, and increased insurance rates. Stigmatization makes it harder to locate or return to work, obtain housing, establish friends, or participate in social activities. Stigma lowers a person’s self-esteem and makes them feel inferior. Family members are typically stigmatized for concealing loved ones’ mental health issues. Stigma thrives on ignorance, bad attitudes, and unfriendly or discriminating behavior. To confront and remove mental health stigma, we must first understand its origins.
