I’LL GO FIRST

I always knew I had a little anxiety. Being shy did not help, but over the years, it has become more unbearable, leaving me with an uneasy feeling in social situations. I tried ignoring it and going with the flow in the past, but only to feel out of place. To feel normal is an everyday struggle; you don’t understand the energy it takes to tame my symptoms when others are around, having a good time, talking, and laughing. I’m cool, too, damn it! My anxiety makes me feel nervous and awkward, but that’s not even the half. Anxiety is why I may not look you in the eyes when talking, or I have a C average in college because I can’t find it in me to participate in class discussions. OH, and Facebook, yall know Im the storyteller/messenger, and I know a song; wanna hear it, hear it go, but I can’t tell you the last time I scrolled down my timeline, changed my profile picture, or commented back.

I apologize. I’m not trying to be rude, even though my anxiety makes me feel that way, and it’s starting to piss me off! The only thing stopping me from ultimately healing is my anxiety, and trust me, it has been a hard road, but I am proud of myself. I want to get better, so I can not let my anxiety get in the way.

So, where do I start? I believe I just did. How, you ask? By talking about it. Finally, feeling comfortable sharing my mental health issues. If more people felt comfortable sharing their struggles with mental health, we will give more attention to the topic. Being open about your mental health challenges may help others around you take better care of their own. The mental health stigma is ruining people’s lives because we are too embarrassed to speak about it and seek treatment. You guys know I am about protecting your mental, and I get it. The stigma associated with mental health issues makes it difficult for anyone to come forward and confess they have one. If you do not feel ready to talk about your experiences with friends, or family, talking to a professional is a great way to feel better. It’s time to help ourselves and others who have a mental illness. It’s time to end the stigma; it’s time to talk.
